The Most ‘Scenic Train Ride’ in the U.S.
Connecting the Colorado mountain towns of Durango and Silverton, this stretch of railway operating since 1882 has been voted the most scenic train ride in the United States. This stretch of railway meanders through the rugged San Juan Mountains of Colorado ascending two mountain passes over 10,000 feet in elevation.
Along the journey the train runs along the Highline, a 400-foot cliff that drops to the Animas River and the Horseshoe Curve, a turn so tight that passengers can peek out the window and watch the locomotive in action.
For prospective travelers looking to experience this one-of-a-kind train ride, currently the Highline Express runs on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday until July 31. Coach seats are $81 for adults and $57 for children ages 4 to 11. Open air gondola seats are $89 for adults and $65 for children.
